Volunteering for fun!

If you can only give up the odd day or so then volunteering to help at the Degree Ceremonies or at the Residential Schools would be ideal for you.

Degree Ceremonies

There are two ways of helping on one of the three days of ceremonies - currently held at the Barbican: setting up and selling gifts from our shop, and/or "Processing" which involves representing the student body by being in the Procession of dignitaries into the hall, wearing academic dress, and being seated on the stage throughout the ceremony, diligently clapping as each graduate gets their award.

It's an early start as we have to set up and be ready by the time the first graduands and their families arrive but it is great fun and easy to make the sales as nearly everyone wants to buy something! We get together beforehand in an informal training session so we can familiarise ourselves with the goods and the paperwork, and get to know each other. If you don't like selling you can always Process or just help behind the scenes - there's always plenty to do!

Travelling expenses and food are provided by the O U.

Residential Schools

The London Residential Schools are held at Queen Mary's University in Mile End and O U S A attends only at weekends, unlike other "Resi Schools".

On Saturdays we help the O U Staff with "meeting and greeting" the students as they arrive by doing their name badges and generally pointing bewildered students in the right direction for their accommodation, food and tutorials. We sell raffle tickets and run a quiz on the Saturday evening to raise funds for either O US A or O U S E T and generally promote O U S A over the weekends that we are there.

Travelling expenses are provided by O U S A and food by the O U.
